Chicana, Cholas, y Chisme

Hello everyone, I am excited to announce to you that I signed up for the Chicanas, Cholas, y Chisme writing program at Casa 0101 Theatre in Boyle Heights, L.A. in September of 2014. The class was headed by two directors Claudia Duran and Lindsey Haley, there were fourteen (14) women in the class including me. We all wrote in Spanish and English telling our Bilingual/bi-cultural stories. The focus was to write a five minute play, a one act play and a monologue. The writing group could write for all three segments or not. I wrote a five minute played called, "Velorio," and a one act play called."California Dreamin'." I also took the directing class offered to us that was held after the writing class ended. I was given the opportunity to direct one of the five minute plays called, "Baby Blues," written by Gabby Gonzalez.

The five minute plays were performed at Casa 0101 March 6-April 12 and they were very well received by the community. The audience members were thanking us as they were leaving saying that, "They really enjoyed the show, and were returning with their family and friends. And they did sometimes with a party of 15 people. It was amazing! Amazing because the audience could relate to the stories, the characters, and the bilingual language and bi-culture.

Then we selected the actors to perform the one acts and I was acting as assistant manager for this segment of the production.  Again, the production was a success.

I did not write a monologue but I was acting as a co-producer for this segment of the three part project.

What I learned at Casa 0101's Chicanas, Cholas, y Chisme writing program was to produce, direct, and write for theatre. I met a lot of wonderful women who also wanted to have a voice. I felt good about what we were able to accomplish, and I know we brought pride to the community.

There were three five minute films that were made from three five minute plays and I was assistant director for all three films and editor for one of the five minute films called, "The Town I Live In."
